Iron Powder Cores + SMC are made of high purity iron powder, mixed with insulating epoxy resins, and compressed at extremely high pressures to form toroids, blocks, pot cores, etc. This results in a magnetic material with a distributed gap. Glass fibers are sometimes added to increase strength.

Iron powder cores are meant to store magnetic energy with the least core loss.  So they offer low permeability (30 to 600) and produce low core loss at high frequencies (up to 20 kHz). These materials are made primarily as 2D shapes of toroids, pot cores, etc. for use in transformers and inductors by the Power Electronics industry. The standard 2D shapes do not require additional tooling costs.

Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC) are meant to transmit magnetic energy with the least core loss. So their permeability is significantly higher than Iron powder cores (but lower than electrical steels).  They are primarily made in 3D shapes of T-cores for use in electric motors, sensors, etc. Because the 3D shapes are custom, they require significant investment in tooling costs.

The trace impurities (that impact the core loss and B(H) curves) differ with manufacturers, even if the composition is the same. So MagWeb lists the properties of steels by each manufacturer, irrespective of their grade.

Version 6 stores both B(H) and Core Loss properties of each grade in a single excel file.  MagWeb’s Iron Powder + SMC Folder has 174 excel files listing the magnetic properties of these materials, produced by 7 manufacturers.  It includes data for Iron Powder Cores and Soft Magnetic Composites.  It 89 contain B(H) magnetization data sets and 85 core loss data sets.  For a full list of all these grades, please click on ‘Steels List’ on the home page.

Data in Version 6 also exploited a novel data smoother. It is not unusual for measured data to be rough. Rough data can slow solution convergence.  To prevent such slowdown, MagWeb locates all rough spots in all raw data and spot-cleans them.  Version 6 also extrapolated all smoothed data to saturation. You can download Saturation Flux Density Js of thousands of Grades from SMAG – Materials link.

By downloading this folder you will have 174 files of magnetic properties of all iron powder cores + SMC produced worldwide at your fingertips!

Please review the Steels Handbook for more technical information on the magnetic properties of these materials.
