Alloy Powder cores are made of “iron alloy” powders mixed with epoxy resins, which are compressed at high pressure to form toroids, pot cores, etc. Their permeability ranges from 10 to 600 and saturation flux density ranges from 0.7 to 1.6 T.  They are mainly used in inductors and transformers in the power electronics industry.

Of these, MPP (made from 80% Ni Steel powders) offers the lowest core losses but has lower flux capacity (Js ~0.75T).  Koolmu also offers competitively low core loss. Xflux (made from high Si steel) has the highest saturation flux density (Js~ 1.6T) but produces the highest losses. Amoflux (made by powdering Metglas ribbon) offers a 50% lower loss than HiFlux (made from 50% Ni Steel).   Most alloy powder cores can operate up to 200 C, excepting Amoflux which is limited to 155 C.

Several firms produce powder cores of the same composition. But the core-loss and B(H) curves are sensitive to trace impurities, even if the composition is the same. So MagWeb lists the properties of alloy powder cores produced by each firm, irrespective of their being of the same composition.

Version 6 stores both B(H) and Core Loss properties of each grade in a single excel file.MagWeb’s Alloy Powder Core Folder has 92 excel files listing the magnetic properties of these materials, produced by 3 manufacturers.  They contain 30  B(H) magnetization data sets and 62 core loss data sets.  For names of all these grades please click on ‘Steels List’.

Data in Version 6 also exploited a novel data smoother. It is not unusual for measured data to be rough. Rough data can slow solution convergence.  To prevent such slowdown, MagWeb locates all rough spots in all raw data and spot-cleans them.  Version 6 also extrapolated all smoothed data to saturation. You can download Saturation Flux Density Js of thousands of Grades from SMAG – Materials link.

By downloading this folder you will have 92 files on magnetic properties of all alloy powder cores at your fingertips!

Please review the Steels Handbook for more technical information on the magnetic properties of these materials.

This website is designed for an instant download of Folders (containing the magnetic property files) via credit card. If you wish to purchase via quote/purchase order, please email rao@magweb.us
